About the Study

a vital connection

The US212 corridor provides a vital connection across the Missouri River (Lake Oahe), connecting communities, commerce, and recreational uses.  However, the existing aging structure has been heavily impacted by landslides.  The south approach of the existing Forest City Bridge is affected by current active landslides which have resulted in millions of dollars in repair and mitigation expenses since the bridge opened to traffic in 1958.

Study Goals:

  • Analyze the existing bridge and determine the potential locations for a relocated US212 bridge over the Missouri River.  The option to leave the bridge in its current location will be included in the analysis.

  • Evaluate the feasible corridors for US212 to connect to the new potential bridge locations and determine the preferred option.

  • Maintain the highway continuity and connections needed within the north central region of South Dakota.
